  1. I have never heard of a person with a knee injury snapping and murdering a bunch of people. I have heard LOTS of stories about people with mental illnesses snapping and murdering people. The 2 aren't even remotely comparable, and it's an absurd argument. There is a reason why mental illness has a "stigma" attached to it. It's because when you are mentally unbalanced, you're more prone to losing control of your emotions, and that can make people extremely dangerous.

  2. All the comments, I agree with Dr Phil, medication is not a panacea, and pain is ABSOLUTELY a motivator; I agree 100%
But I think the key thing here is, depression can completely destroy you, destroy your motivation, your hope, the ability to get out of bed, etc.

Medication numbs your depression, so it can at least give you some motivation to get out of bed, and provide you with hope, and then the rest is up to you.
Medication pushes you to to fight harder in your fight to get rid of the pain, it doesn’t completely mask your pain.

  3. Pain is not a motivator for depression. The pain from depression becomes familiar very quickly. You begin to feel like you deserve it, and it almost becomes comfortable in twisted sort of way. Carry the pain for long enough and you'll almost fear its absence and try to hold on to it ever tighter. It defines you, it depreciates your self worth, and leaves you a mere shadow of your former self living a life of unrealized potential.

    Depression is seriously insidious.
