I think most of them choose it
I was on the streets of SF for 2 1/2 yrs .. In and out shelters every 3 months but I never used drugs, I never shit or pissed in public, and I never panhandled. I just have 2 mental disorders that were going untreated at the time and couldn't hold a job. I got fed up with the shelters being so dirty and depressing that i eventually left SF. Fortunately, I met someone who let me stay on his couch in a different city. It hasn't been easy but now I'm on the right meds , have a fulltime job, and rebuilding my credit. I'm so happy with life now but I wish everyone got the chance I did. Normal people have to realize that people with mental illness need time and support to get off the street permanently. It might take a few years to undo the damage that homeless life causes. I think there should be programs that send homeless people to live in apts where there aren't a lot of other homeless people. Like maybe 4 per building…. Places where they are no longer in the middle of a shit hole. I like to think of it as the divide and conquer method. It would be better for SF and easier for other county's to deal with the burden of housing. But SF should be the one to pay for it all.
