Rio is not representative of Brazil. Most places are not as f*'d up as Rio, perhaps even prettier.
Even we brazilians are wary of Rio.
I lived there, near the Maracanã stadium. Still a "good" part of the city, I really prefered it to Ipanema and other beach neighborhoods, because the favela was further away, despite being surrounded by them. Had to keep eyes open while running errands, as in most big cities.
