Under ASSAD ITS secular
From the view of the USA the reason Bashar of Syria is an issue is because like his father before him Al-Assad likely aims to create a United Arab World that might challenge the West's economic might. The dreams of a United Arab world of Al-Assad Sr however was shattered via. a sleight of hand by Henry Kissinger. This trick Kissinger pulled over Al-Assad in turn incurred a wrath that led to decades of allegedly Syrian sponsored terrorists attacks all over the West. By this time Al-Assad Sr has given up hopes of a United Arab world rather he would conduct a campaign of vengeance against the West.
Though Al-Assad Sr have given up hopes of a United Arab World there came another man named Muamar Gaddafi of Libya who now takes on this mantle while advocating his "Third Way" system. This however was not taken kindly by the West and so as our Former Secretary of State, said "we came, we saw, he died, *cackles". Now being that Gaddafi is out of the picture we now see Al-Assad Jr seeking to resume what his father given up on and so now we see the Syrian conflict.
TLDR; USA wanting to maintain the economic might of the West post-WW2 goes about doing so by installing proxy governments within the Arab World in order to cause internal conflicts to wrought the regions of any hopes of creating a united front against the West's economic might.
