Why do people get fat? Insulin Resistance. Why do people get IR? Inflammation & high Cortisol (stress hormone) can cause it, but prolonged over consumption of carbs is what leads to more than 90% of obesity. It's thought to begin with fat cells and then spill over into other cell groups and finally the muscle cells. When it hits the muscle cells, we have IR. With IR, the cells don't readily take in glucose transported by insulin, so the body adjusts by increasing insulin levels. This creates an elevated main metabolic growth hormone (insulin) that keeps the body from burning fats when carbs don't come in until insulin levels go down.
Why are people over consuming carbs? 75% of everything has added sugar. Sugar is addictive. Sugar suppresses Leptin, a hormone that tells the stomach it's full, cranks up Ghrehin, a hunger hormone that gives us the growling stomach to eat more, jacks Dopamine, a hormone related to "reward" & addiction and suppresses Serotonin, the happy hormone that makes you feel happy.
So, is it the body or the brain? It's both but not for Stephan Guyenet's reasons he gives. It's the brain because of it's choices of ignorance in understanding how the body works. It's the brain because of the brain's choices by both the food manufacturers and consumers to eat a high carb food supply (75% processed foods) for profit and convenience. But, it's also the body (IR). Once hormones, specifically insulin gets out of balance, the body can't lose weight regardless of the temporary choices we make to stop eating carbs. What is the best way to lower IR? A juice fast, but that's for another conversation.
Both of these guys are irritating beyond belief, hats off to you joe you have to put up with some sh*t
I can understand why Stephan got salty towards this Gary guy. Its not even that I disagree with him, there's just something about the way he talks that gets irritating and exhausting.
Gary needs to learn to stop interrupting people while they’re talking.
It's so hard to listen to Guyanet. He comes off as such a smug, dogmatic jerk. He was angry and defensive before the conversation even started. And, years later, haven't we found out they're both right to a certain extent? In fact, that Guyanet is more wrong, and that our food choices and gut bacteria affect the brain MORE than vice versa? Please correct me if I'm wrong.
