In the bible, mammon appears to be a term used to represent money. But in later works, mammon would become personified into an actual demon – one who robs the earth of her gold and tricks men onto his path.

A selfish and excessive desire for more of something (such as money) than is needed. Money is just one manifestation. Desiring more than needed (greed) breeds fear which in turn causes the other sins. It is the gateway sin basically. Humanities' greatest source of delusion and according to Socrates the cause of all wars.
