Hendrix wasn't doing heroin.It's been documented. When he died the autopsy showed there was no evidence of heroin use. these two guys are letting the myth and the legend obscure the truth. It was proven that the drugs in his flight bag in Toronto were put there by someone else. make no mistake Jimi liked to get high but he was not a junkie..now check out Janis Joplin…she died of a heroin overdose…Morrison is a good candidate as well.

Classic correlation vs causation problem. We can see a correlation between taking drugs and creativity. But there are three basic ways to interpret that correlation: A) The drugs contribute to the creativity, as Joe posits.
B) Having a creativity/explorative mind contributes to the desire to experiment, in general, particularly with one's consciousness, including with drugs(In other words, it's the other way around).
C) Both the creativity and the desire to experiment with one's consciousness stem entirely from some mutual third, cause – perhaps general discontent, depression, unhappiness. Such feelings can stimulate both the creativity and drug use, independently. (In other words, 'neither A nor B.') Or a culture in which nearly everybody took drugs who could afford them, making coincidence probable.
D) Both A and B. The creativity makes one want to try drugs, which in turn generate more creativity, which strengthen one's desire to try drugs again, and so forth, as one trades one's physical health for creativity until one is dead(mutually reinforcing dynamics/mutual causation.)
E) A, B, and C(All of the above.)
It is worth noting that the greatest songwriter of all time, Bob Dylan did not die of drugs and does not appear to be an addict of any drug. He probably did use drugs though, and they may have helped his creativity, taking "Mr. Tambourine Man" as a likely example. He wrote "All along the Watchtower," btw., one of his minor hits, which Jimmy Hendrix covered.
