If someone is staring you in the eyes, just smile and ask them how their day is going. You might make a friend. Or you might make their day. Or they might tell you to shut up and leave them alone, in which case you could just say, "ok". Either way you will know more about your current environmental situation so that you don't have to just fight or flight while still showing confidence through curiosity.

A childhood friend of mine was playing with his daughter in the backyard. He went to get up and fell over, hit his head on the concrete porch. A week later his parents had to turn off life support.
