  1. I'm with Herb on this one. I was fortunate enough to live in Hawaii for a few years and I was warned by a few people that "they're pretty racist over there, and they really don't like white people". I was born and raised in the South in a state with a high minority population. I thought to myself it couldn't be that bad, and I'd do what I would want anyone else to do when moving somewhere different and try to assimilate.

My experience there was much like my experience anywhere else: most people are overwhelmingly kind and generous, and yes you do run into the occasional ignorant idiot. I had a coworker that offered me white rice at lunch and asked me to try it (as if the US South, or the mainland for that matter, has no clue what rice is). I had people ask me what it was like to "come from such a racist place". These things do happen, but if you show people a bit of yourself they'll usually judge you for your behavior alone. In all my travel in my life you learn that most places in the world will treat you just fine as long as you show respect, stay curious, and share a bit of your own culture.
