  1. I am Russian and I can tell you that all public banya's in Russia I know have separate baths for men and women. Only family banya is an exception, because it is too expensive to build 2 banya chambers for average 2- 4 family members. In public banyas people are always naked, no one cares about your nakedness, and you don't care as well. It is important to be evenly exposed to steam, only a head is to be covered with a woolen hat to prevent overheat. There are some studies saying overheating testicles is something to be avoided for it is bad for men's reproductive system, so rememeber that. But al in all, the whole banya experience is a fantastic thing for the most of people without heart/kidney issues.
    The difference between Finnish sauna and Russian banya is that Finnish sauna is dry. They don't spill hot water on red-hot rocks to produce steam, they just enjoy dry hot air.
    In Russia we warm up for 3-5 minutes in a dry (!) banya during a first entry. This is to let your body adjust to high temperature. Then take a quick shower and have a short rest outside on a couch, drink some water or herbal tea. Then, we enter for a second time and stay another 3-5 minutes and prepare birch or oak brooms by putting them into a bucket filled with water. Some people do this beforehad, but I don't – the longer brooms stay in water, the quicker they soften and lose their resilience. 5 minutes is enough. Start waving brooms in air to feel how hot the air is. Based on that you decide how much water to spill on rocks on a stove afterwards. Start massaging yourself with that brooms, by massaging I mean beating yourself 🙂 Legs, feet, arms, back. If you have a companion, ask him or her to lash you (only in family saunas, though in public saunas you will have a paid "banshik" who carries that out). When finished, go out and dive into a cold bath/pool. The water has to be really cold, slightly above freezing point. In rural areas people run outside their private banyas and jump into snow.
    In the subsequent 3rd and 4th entries we usually do the same stuff with brooms and splash more water on rocks, because a stove gets cooler and the only way to keep air hot is to get a heat from rocks. Have a longer rests on a couch after the 3rd time and don't rush. Never hustle in banya, do things slower than usualy, always track how you feel and take deep breaths. Don't go to banya alone for safety reasons.
