They really shouldnt pay them, they should allow them to make money off their likeness
Go ahead and turn NCAA basketball into the NBA. Let's see how quickly viewership declines. There is a difference between people who play for the passion of the game and for money. Yes I agree these STUDENT athletes shouldn't have to worry about working while taking care of their studies and play. But these players could go to Europe or Asia and roll the dice there if they want to start being a pro at 18. I think nearly everyone would concede to the success, passion, and knowledge of the NCAA as it stands before taking that journey.
If college athletics started being run like a business where you have to pay players, over 90% of college athletics would be cut. Most college sport programs are not profitable. Players should be able to get endorsements, shoes deals, sponsorships, etc, but having to pay players would be the end of college sports. It’s also amateur, meaning they don’t get paid.
We should pay college athletes? Um, we already do dumb asses….
I'd just say this. If athletes shouldn't be paid then let's change the rules of the sport so that nobody can practice more than 15 hrs a week, coach pay caps, schools have to use donations to reduce tuition/book costs for lower income students. Also, why not put the NCAA on notice by imposing caps on all their salaries and mandating that the NCAA can only use 25% of what it receives on salaries, office equipment and other such items while using the 75% for school donations. I would bet the NCAA would make some BS excuse within 1 minute of hearing this.
