To pass this as a simple "navigational device" is, at best, extremely naive. This device could accurately predict the sun and moon's location at any given future date. This was the most accurate device for keeping time until 1582 when the Gregorian Calendar went into effect. We literally lost the ability to accurately keep time for over 700 years while this was at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea. Humanity lost time.
There's 100,000 moving parts involved in all the combined machinery to build a car…..
We always underestimate our ancestors but they were a lot more savy than we give them credit for. Has any sculptor equalled Michealangelos. Pieta has any violin maker equalled Stradivari. Has any artist equalled Rembrant has any composer equalled Mozart or Bach
