You should be have to weighed often before fights maybe once a week for 8-12 weeks and if you're not maintaining that weight than you shouldn't be able to fight in that division.
I'm a pro MMA fighter, PLEASE JOE, LET'S GET RID OF WEIGHT CUTTING!!! This is my idea… MMA weight cut idea We need to treat the weight classes more like modern day heavyweight,in that you have a spectrum of weight difference between a certain weight class.
My idea is to Have two weigh ins, the first one the day before the fight, and one on fight day right before the event started.
Basically, the day before your fight, you weigh in your respected weight class. And then the day off the fight you weigh in again, but your aloud a 5 pound allowance(this most likely be around 2 or 3 hours before your fight took place, depending on your place in the fight card)
My Mock up Weight classes 130 to 142 bantamweight 143 to 155 lightweight 156 to 168 welterweight 169 to 185 middleweight 186 to 200 cruiserweight 201 to 230 light heavyweight 231 to 265 heavyweight
The reason for the 5 pound allounce(after the first weigh in) is for someone like me, because I naturally walk around at 162 lbs,so based on my moc-up weight classes above, I would sit just above of my target weight class of "lightweight", so I would be able to just naturally weigh in, with very minimal weight cutting(2lbs), and then still have a 5 pound allowance. For example,If I weighed 168 pounds(rather then 162lbs),that would mean I would have to gain more muscle and fight in the next weight class up which is "welterweight"(161 to 175 lbs)
This would totally limit the amount of weight you can cut, and dramatically have a positive effect on fighters health and probably make the fights more exciting. It would make a broader spectrum of weight (just like modern heavyweight). so you might have someone in the "middleweight" class who's like 182 lbs vs a guy who's 187 lbs for example. I think that makes things more interesting. And fighters won't be so dehydrated anymore. In turn, fighters would have more energy to make crazy, and exciting fights.
If you got rid of weight cutting, killers like Max Holloway would disappear. He couldn't hold up with 185lb fighters. Dude walks around between 170-185. I love him. He'd die at those classes.

Joe I was wondering how does weight cutting effect concussions? Are you more likely to get concussions if you are dehydrated
