When you get excited your scenes increase. When you're scared of something you cant see you start hear things.
Regarding the science of memory, every time you “access” that memory you rewrite it with an element of your current emotional state. This is why we reminisce over the good old times and we constantly remember traumatic events down to the fine details and the fear/flash backs/PTSD remains for some folks.
