  1. I need to say something here…I love you, Joe. But this happened a few times where I'm from. Green peace hippies in Olympia and Seattle decided to reintroduce wolves (European dogs killed off our wolves long ago) into the Olympic National Park and Hoh River Rainforest in WA state.
If you don't know, this area is truly one of the last of its kind in the US. Most rainfall in the inland US, last Rainforest in the inland US. Still boasts hundreds of acre that haven't been completely mapped yet. Rural. Rugged. Wet. One way in, one way out, we still get snowed in during winters, etc etc
These politicians don't live here. Apparently, we didn't get a choice. We didn't really know what to think because there are only a few valleys we can live in and then the reservations have a lot of the coast. The natives were concerned about this though. And they ended up being correct.
We had campaigned for cougar restorations in the 70s and 80s. No dogs, then an all out ban. Before that we were able to restore our elk populations as well with the help of President Roosevelt all those years ago. One by one we got push back but Clallam County (the west end of it) and our local tribes finally won out. Banned clear cutting, banned old growth cutting, etc etc and it worked. Lefs not forget our orca whales being stolen off our shores as well. Our pods are back and gorgeous. It's so beautiful.
With getting our predators numbers' back up at the same time as declaring "ceded lands" our human habitat got more narrow. We didn't need much, it's rural and people don't like living hours away from grocery stores.
Our bears, cougars and large coyote super packs stayed in the range and didn't venture much into the valleys. Until they decided to put wolves back in. And on the NW area of the Olympic ranges. It went to shit fast, 1st winter our large predators pushed them into our valleys and beaches and we lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in farm animals as well as pets. Come spring time they almost decimated 2 local salmon species whom we were already trying to restore. Then finally it happened, we had 2 kids attacked. No matter how much we tried to tell them that these wolves are new here, they aren't even the original species that were here long ago. Etc and no one listened. It wasn't their back yard so they made up excuses like we haven't saved our lands before.
Somehow…the wolves just disappeared, not sure how that happened. 🤔 bit they reintroduced again with the same results except this time black bear began migrations to anywhere their cubs wouldn't be taken by cougar and wolves. It was frustrating to not be heard. But once again, I guess they died out. Something happened because they are all dead. But idk….
My point is, it's not always going to work. The story I just told here pits ppl against rural residents sometimes like we don't know what's up. Chief Seattle and the majority of PNW natives were green peace before green peace. They truly believe it is there job to be caretakers of their lands and homes and out here we support them. Without them we would have lost so much. Species that don't exist anywhere else. Hundreds of them. The Rainforest I mentioned earlier use to extend from Alaska to California.
I'm sorry but, we will continue to be here where no one comes out much anyways and guard our lands for ALL of you and our future generations. At least we don't look like Seattle or Portland. Our track record is pretty good on that front, I believe. Please get full stories before we just jump.
