It was a Medieval defensive type of fire trap. First dig a ditch outside the walls, one that gives the attacking enemy cover from arrow fire from the walls, enticing the enemy to use it for cover, then ahead of time, fill said ditch bottom with crazy flammable materials, and lots and lots of straw and tar, so that when the enemy masses their guys in the ditch for cover (or what have you, it's just one example of how it was used) you fire flaming arrows at the prelaid pitch patch, and lighter up!!!!
Works everytime and will work even today, even more so in some circumstances when you pre-lay remote detonated mines too!!!
This is something you should be talking to Joey Diaz about… I mean the voice deepness matches so I understand the confusion
