The okinawans took different styles and techniques from styles and made a huge array of different styles. When a well known judo representative came to the island, a lot of tensions between China and Japan had risen so to keep him happy they completely renamed the original name which meant something along to lines of mixed Chinese kenpo to karate. Technically speaking the Japanese had MMA before it was cool. Although a huge reason why MMA is so popular today is partly cause Bruce Lee and other artists were able to increase MAs popularity, and people who actually paid attention to Bruce Lee outside of his somewhat cringe movies could see he was a visionary of MMA and MA values during that time. He was not the only one tho.
