Joe fundamentally misunderstands the purpose of defunding the police. The police absolutely do not need more funding.
Defunding the police means restructuring police departments. It means firing the shitty, racist, murderous cops that should have been removed 50+ years ago & changing who responds to certain calls. Police as we have them today are only needed for like 20% of calls in reality. For responding to things like noise complaints, traffic accidents, low level theft, self-harm threats & crisis incidents, & evening traffic infractions, etc, we don't need police with handguns on their hips, shotguns in their cars, tasers, pepper spray, rubber bullets, etc, etc. Social workers could do a large portion of what police got taken off from. We could create another whole type of enforcement position for responding to things that don't need social workers.
Only truly violent threats should be responded to by cops trained to deal with high pressure, life-threatening situations like that. This should be such an obvious solution we can all agree to. *Why the hell do we need armed, stressed out, roid-raging, PTSD suffering, angry police responding to non-violent, non-threatening issues & people?
