  1. 49:30 Joe not understanding that the fact that there are situations where a police needs to resort to firearms does not mean that the rate at which they do so is justified. He's thinking Nancy is talking about whether police are allowed to pull out a gun–a very black and white way to frame the issue–when Nancy is talking about the rate at which it happens and whether it actually matches the use of force needed. It is obvious that police get burned out when they have to handle situations where escalation is the only solution they have been trained to use: nobody is healthy in the long run if they have to keep resorting to violence just to do their job.

Additionally, when they speak about the police needing more training in deescalation and thus more money rather than less, they are not mentioning the fact that social workers are already trained in what the police need to do. So what the sensible part of the defund police movement is about is that police should be integrated with social workers more, and have them serve the community together in a way where the two professions help and learn from each other. None of this is of course possible unless attitudes change from a retributive idea of justice to a rehabilitative one, where criminals need help rather than punishment and containment (which obv won't happen when prison-industrial complex got everyone in their pockets and every white house crook behind them).
