The Montauk Project, a conspiracy theory rooted in the works of Preston Nichols and Peter Moon, is often linked to claims of time travel and interdimensional exploration, drawing parallels to the concept of a “Stargate.” Allegedly conducted at Camp Hero, a decommissioned Air Force base on Long Island, New York, the project is said to have evolved from the Philadelphia Experiment of 1943, where the USS Eldridge was reportedly rendered invisible and accidentally teleported through time and space. Nichols and others, like Al Bielek, claim that by the late 1970s and early 1980s, Montauk researchers developed a “Time Tunnel”—a stable portal enabling travel across time and space—using advanced technology possibly influenced by Nikola Tesla and extraterrestrial collaboration. This portal supposedly allowed contact with alien beings and exploration of distant locations, such as Mars, echoing the science-fiction trope of a Stargate as a gateway to other dimensions or eras.
The connection to Stargate-like phenomena deepens with accounts of a “Montauk Chair,” a device allegedly amplifying psychic abilities to manipulate reality and open these portals, reminiscent of the Stargate program’s fictional depiction of wormhole travel. On August 12, 1983, the project purportedly interlocked with the Philadelphia Experiment in hyperspace, creating a time wormhole that bridged 1943 and 1983, through which individuals like Bielek and Duncan Cameron claimed to have traveled. While these stories remain unverified and are widely dismissed as fiction, their blend of mind control, quantum physics, and interdimensional travel fuels speculation about secret government experiments akin to a real-world Stargate, inspiring works like Stranger Things and captivating conspiracy enthusiasts.
