It is widely known that cancer cells can be "seeded" along the pathway of the needle during a biopsy. Doctors take precautions to try and avoid leaving cells behind and avoid spreading the cancer. It is entirely possible that the biopsy of his prostate spread the cancer to his rectum. It also could have metastasized on it's own.
