  1. 56:11 Correction: the Dead Sea Scrolls were written by the Essenes, not the Gnostics. The Essenes were Jewish. The Gnostics were Christians. But as far as their beliefs and their histories go, they were more similar in many ways to what the Christ figure would have been than the Gnostics, who incorporated many Greek and Roman and Platonic ideas into their religion. The Essenes were a cult that believed an apocalypse was coming around the year zero AD. Historian consider the Roman occupation of Jerusalem, and the cognitive dissonance that resulted from that experience on behalf of the Jewish people living there as the basic underlying influence that lead to the Essene cult, as well as the many messianic figures that arose during that time in the desert, including many mystics and political radicals that we would recognize variously as John the Baptist or Jesus from the New Testament. There were many Apocryphas and descriptions of many Jesus type figures. We only remember Jesus because he was a figure who incorporated and synthesized all of the different ideas emerging at that time ("king" on one hand, symbolic of political independence, and "son of god" or "son of man" on the other hand, representing a mystic force). In fact, He probably never existed, and remains today as a figure who symbolizes the summary of the teachings of many different Jewish Charismatic authorities.
