Great guest. Just one observation though, the Amazon is not being deforested by the “poor Brazilian farmer” that has no other means of survival but rather by huge cattle and mining companies (with their whole lobbying powers and rackets of interested parties)owned by the already uber-rich. The average Brazilian benefits zilch from this destruction.
Naval is a good example of one benefit of financial independence. You have the time to be introspective and to have your own philosophical framework for life. Most of us are too busy making a living to stop and think.
Technological development is not keeping up with environmental degradation. And technology can't bend the law of physics. No infinite growth on a finite planet.
On top of that, if we need growth to help countries out of poverty, we don't need growth in the west, but in those poor countries.
