  2. Things people like Eric need to realize and get over:
    1. You are not and never were "the left." Antifa – the socialists, soc dems, dem socs, ancoms, Marxists, Leninists, Trotskyites, Stalinists, Maoists, and so on – those are the left. They hate you. They hate you as much as any Nazi hates a Jew. "Liberals get the bullet too" is not just some graffiti sprayed on a wall in Berkeley. That's what they want. That's not just "the extreme" left. That's what leftism is. You and the rest of the NPR liberals are not them. You are not left and never were.
    2. You have a conception about the Republican party being moustache-twirling aristocrats or cross-eyed, bible literalists who want us in a holy war with the entire Middle East and the LGBTQIAAP+ crowd until Jesus literally returns to kick off the rapture – whichever you believe – that is not representative of what the Republicans are today. The first group was always a caricature. Propaganda based on misunderstandings and half-truths. The second does exist, but is so toothless these days that they basically don't matter. They're a strawman that fringe ideologues use to rile their bases. In truth, they're passé. You mainly have 3 kinds of Republicans in office today:
    – neoliberals pretending to be conservatives (Neocons, RINOs) who only manage to stay in office through political influence or the lack of viable challengers.
    – people who will talk a big conservative game but are ultimately cowards
    – a few people like Rand Paul who actually try to hold people accountable (but are utterly lacking political influence to do anything that matters)
    Groups 1 and 2 are either willing or unwitting toadies for the entrenched administrative state – the group that runs the Democrats these days – and will never do anything but make things worse because that's how they consolidate power. "Never let a good crisis go to waste," as the saying goes. They either tacitly support groups like antifa or provide ideological fodder for those fringe groups.

    Group 3 is what needs your help. You don't need to agree, but you need to encourage the search for real accountability, not witch hunts – be they Benghazi for the GOP or #4.

    3. The Democrats don't exist anymore. They are a husk being controlled by the permanent administrative state. They're akin to the eunuchs of the Chinese imperial court: corrupt, vicious, and manipulative. Consequentl, you will never see a Democrat held accountable. Obama drone struck two American citizens abroad and now does speaking engagements. Trump was impeached – twice – for… ??? Speaking of…

    4. Trump is a red herring. He's bait. You, Sam Harris, and many of the other "rational left" types lose all sense and objectivity whenever his name is merely mentioned. He's the perfect demonstration of how easily you and your ilk are swayed by the propaganda machine. There was no Russia collusion. There were no hidden classified documents at Mar A Lago. There was no "pee tape." Don't mistake this for a defense of Trump, though. This is a reality check. You have a blind spot. You need to be aware of this hole in your supposed rational thinking. You've demonstrated to the world that you can be broken through obvious, naked propaganda. You've broadcasted to anyone who would listen that you have a "stop thinking" button and helpfully added exactly how to press it. You didn't just let yourself be fooled by obvious falsehoods, either. You still cling to them today. You can't let yourself admit that you might have been wrong in a few places, and that's dangerous. If they can get to our "best thinkers," who else can they get to? The people behind the Trump outrage machine have successfully driven a wedge between people like you and James Lindsay: people they could break and people who were able to check their blind spots. You need to have the humility to fix that.
