Before google, basically before ubiquitous access to the internet, intellectual development and education really depended on where you where. Location determined access to mostly printed materials and even IF you had access, people had to become aware that an idea existed before you even could go look and research it. Even the concept of research and how to research, you know, on an amateur level was also an idea that wasn't known in it's full implications.
If one's local libraries were limited then so were your horizons. Access to, nowadays, basic planning and ideas, study methods, were a bit of a black art. If people did not know the questions to ask of a knowledgeable person then in essence it wouldn't help.
