America used to oppose everything British. That's why they chose the word soccer.
In Ireland & Austrailia it is mostly known as soccer, also.
American Football is called football because the ball used to play it at the time of invention of the sport was 1 foot long. After the invention of the forward pass the shape and length was changed. Today's NFL football is about 11.3 inches. Soccer has been called soccer all over the world for years… Brazilians referred to their style as Soga Bonita long before Americans even started taking football seriously. People all over the world referred to the Brazilian style as Brazilian Soccer. We didn't name the sport soccer but we adopted it because we already had a sport called football.
If we had to switch the name I would vote for Grid Iron
