It’s short for association football, English slang , it’s not an American term
American football should be called American rugby!!! they have more in common.
On behalf of England you will be murdered if you call football soccer
“Socks” you wear Socks on your feet. If you think about it a lot of sports teams in the US have used socks/sox and even “legs” as part of their team names.
So referencing socks a person playing would be referenced as a “sock’er”
Maybe also back in the day you could identify what team you are on my color of socks or how you wore your pants/shorts rolling up the legs or not, for pickup game purposes. Kind of like how in the summer on basketball courts you play shirts vs skins.
My guess would be that American football was played in America first and it was just called football. Then European football came over and they needed a new word for it. I would assume it's because you sock the ball into the net? Idk.
