I’m going to respectfully disagree with Dr. West on this one. There is a very complicated history of “intra-white” discrimination in the U.S. To be sure, all white people were above all brown people in the American caste system, but to say that Irish and Poles and Italians and Greeks and Syrian Christians (my ancestors) showed up in America and were all declared to be “White” and therefore equal to all other white folks isn’t really true. Middle Eastern people have recently gotten a box on the census form, but they were considered white for the longest time because a Syrian guy who is a distant ancestor of mine (at third or fourth hand or something) actually sued the federal government to be declared white (and won) because he was being denied citizenship on the basis that most Americans at the time thought of Middle Eastern people as “Oriental,” and they therefore excluded from citizenship along with East Asian people like Chinese and Japanese.
This idea of one big, happy white family is quite new, and is really only a product of the mixing of the “white peoples” that happened during the big conscriptions of the first and second World Wars.
