Of course, with Tool it's less ego and more nerding out on every damn permutation of a riff or rhythm or meter.
I mean, sometimes they just get caught up in a mood, and then it HAS to be that way. It's like tarot. There is a ritualistic nature that they cling to. They might not even really need it… they just feel like they do.
