Love how the Gracie machine has appropriated the gentle concept. The word judo consists of 2 Japanese characters, ju, which means "gentle", and do, which means "the way". It applies perfectly in judos case since Kano's aim was to regroup old jujitsu techniques (which also involved weapons and strikes) that allowed an intense practice or randori without risking serious injury or death which was common. You could go all out using these safer techniques. Not being maimed or dead made this art form "gentler" than the previous one. When Gracies removed half the curriculum and only concentrated on the ground, there was no dramatic drop in injuries or deaths.
