  1. The point of meditation is to see that ultimately you can't control your mind. "But what if I practice TM?" Yes, I think TM might actually work, but it's not up to you if you have the inclination. Just like it's not up to you if you love someone. You can't say "I want to love you" and magically you do. You can't choose a thought. You just think them. If you think, "I want to think about an elephant," you've already thought about the elephant in your initial thought.

But… I think TM works because it interrupts thought. Why is this important? When you start paying attention to the sensations in your body at all times (which you should start doing, right now, for forever), you begin to see that we're all clenched, at most times, in some spot inside, with tiny little muscles we don't ever think about (we've likely been clenching our whole lives and have forgotten we are). But, when you start to look at yourself (the sensations of living, moment to moment), you see that you're clenched, and as you pay further attention you see that basically any thought causes clenching, somewhere, even if it's super vague. It's anxiety – and it's always there because we're humans who are aware that we're going to die (and countless other things we worry about). But, we've learned this reaction to fear – this physical muscular clenching inside – because probably it protects us when surviving an incoming punch (to clench your stomach, for ex), but it doesn't work against the incessant barrage of normal, emotional fears and anxiety that we feel, to a greater or lesser degree, all day, every day.

And so TM works because you just say a meaningless sound over and over again, which interrupts your ability to think of other words / ideas / conversations / worries. It's not perfect, of course, but as you do it you get used to falling off the wagon and getting back on. It's the getting back on that's tough because it's an example of you not being in control. You didn't 'choose' to start thinking about something else. You just did. And we don't like that, because we think we're in control (or that we should be). But once you see finally that one can't ever choose a thought, you see that actually nothing is 'in control.' Not because there isn't a God (I think there is but who knows), but because even God doesn't choose what he thinks. Choice is the expression of will, and maybe it's a free will. But you don't choose what that free will is. See?

It's nuts, but it solves all sorts of problems when you finally see it. We learn, of course, and one never knows what one will think or do next – so there's always hope, no matter how dire the life straits. But also, there's always meaning too, and morality, even if we're not clear on those things. We can't HELP but feel something about the moment, and that's our own will and morality expressing itself. Seems that so much of this age is the desire to escape one's conscience, and to escape one's guilt (and the pain thereof). But we can't. The ego wishes it could. But the ego isn't in charge of itself, and that's the solution.

So try TM, because it helps your brain to stop its narrative spooling, which we all do, telling ourselves the story of why we're justified feeling XZY way in ABC situation). Get it to stop by repeating a meaningless sound. But also, admit that you're not in control, in the end – that nothing could be. And the clenching will begin to relent. And you'll feel awe and faith you've never before realized possible, perhaps only for a moment. But you'll know it's there.

  2. Transcendental Meditation is life changing. It's amazing for anxiety, and I've had some profound experiences of transcendence where I am simply experiencing the world with no thoughts, everything around me; people, objects, nature, come ALIVE in a way I've never experienced before. They're so vibrant and beautiful, totally unique in this eternal universe. It's helped me remain balanced inside, no matter the outside circumstances. It will enhance all areas of your life.

You can disagree with the price if you want to. However nothing in life is free, and certainly not in person instruction from a meditation teacher. I've not seen anyone correctly describe the practice in the comments, which further shows that when you don't have direct experience with something, your opinion will never be as true as someone who has. TM will be the best £390 you ever spend, so long as you do the practice.

A final note on the cult thing, YES there is a cult element to it. It's a natural phenomena whenever something is amazing. Look at sports teams, or Star Wars, people go crazy for these things. You don't have to do that. You will never have to follow a belief system, or disclose private matters, or be forced to remain part of the movement. It's not Scientology. It's TM, don't be put off by the comments. If you have anxiety, this is the answer.

  3. I just saw this video. Wow. Sorry but it is CULTISH to say the least. And there have been leaders. A LOT of CONTROVERSY over the yrs. THis guy I don't think he know what he's talking about…
