Oculus Rift is really old… Why would he be excited about that? He didn't mention Rift. It's still the best headset after Index.
John “Hyperspace Artificial Intelligence and Juvenile Delinquent” Carmack. That second part is true btw. He once used chemicals to make thermite and broke into his school to steal a computer. Let’s just be glad he got into video games.
There are many, many programmers that started out by the dream of working on a videogame, and while most of them don't really get that chance, a lot end up becoming great developers. To me, and I'm sure that to many others Carmack has been an inspiration.

Side note: I bought the Oculus Quest after watching this interview and my mind is absolutely blown!
