Facebook ruined Oculus.
I think nerualink would be the way to overcome most limitations but popup ads in my dreams are a real downer.
I don't think the "Smello-VR" will ever take off, it will flounder much like Smell-o-Vision! It completely defeats the point of seamless immersion, sure, it's possible; but just because somethings possible doesn't mean it will be a success/hit
No – That's not VR's destiny, I think true, unrivalled immersion will come in the form of Neural Links as when you're plugged in like that, all that the system will need to do is call upon a memory of a scent or even taste to bring that sensation to life, it could achieve this by activating synapses that relate to that memory and firing them (That's an incredible over simplification of how bastard hard that might be to program I imagine but you get the idea.)
Here's a funny experiment you can do to try this for yourself
Think of your favourite food, think of how it tastes, feels in your mouth – how many chews it takes, now realise that you've actually just tasted that food in your memory and it felt real for a moment, Semmo-VR-ision will NEVER be able to produce that as efficiently as Neural links, unfortunately it's a dead end.
I think Carmack knows that though, he even said along the lines of "if you can improve one thing immensely and help the project overall by cutting out this other thing, then cut the other thing and focus your efforts" – that's a complete paraphrase by the way, but more or less what he said.
Great clip though, majour respect to John 🙂
3d hologram gaming on white walls around u would be wicked. C o d all around u.
6:00 you could do a lot with 10 scents to simulate different environments – beach, jungle, city/smog, rain, fire/smoke, sulfur/gunpowder, vanilla, chocolate, burger, fries
