Me: Nah. Lakes can only freeze BECAUSE ice floats. If ice sank, it would thaw as it sank. Even in the far north, -20f can only freeze 3 feet of soil or water, that's very thin penetration compared to the depth of lakes and the ocean, while the earth, in contrast, is plenty warm. So if ice sank, it would thaw in the warmer waters below making large bodies of water open and useful to fish and us. Win win, not die die.
I knew a pond in Missouri that would freeze from top to bottom, including a single kind of fish that lived in it. The fish would revive in the Spring as the ice melted. Since I was a teen the pond has been filled in my developers. I would love to know what kind of fish they were. I've never seen any fish like them since. Their heads were rounded something like a catfish but they had scales and were only about 6 to 9 inches long. They were round-bodied fish.
