There are some things I explain differently than this video but there are enough positive reactions in the comments section that I think some viewers may be interested in my (equally?) unusual approproach to this subject.
The disciples of Jesus were called Christians first in Antioch. (Acts 11:26) The word, “Christ” is a transliteration of the Greek word Χριστός (Christos) which is the equivalent of the Hebrew word, Messiah.
And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. – Genesis 3:15 I agree with those theologians who refer to this verse as the protoevangelium – the first expression of the gospel. I suspect their creator told Adam and Eve much more about the nature of the universe and the plan of salvation than is recorded in the first few chapters of Genesis. To my way of thinking, Adam and Eve were the first Christians.
The problem is that, if I use the word, “Christian” to describe myself, the majority of people who call themselves Christians subscribe to various creeds and philosophies with which I only partly agree. My religion is personal – not institutional.
My parents died in the 1980s. From a very early age, I was aware that they considered Jesus to be the God of Moses. I never thought of them as “followers” of anyone else. They encouraged my siblings and me to admire such reformers as Martin Luther (Born: 1483 Died: 1546) and John Wesley (Born: 1703 Died: 1791) but they didn’t encourage us to idolize them.
So if I’m not Hebrew and don’t follow the religion of traditional Judaism, if I’m not Arabic and don’t follow the religion of Islam but if I do worship the God of Adam, Noah and Abraham, what should I call my religion?
