  1. Taekwondo may not be perfect as a martial art but it was so pervasive in both Canada and the US it gave so many of us an opportunity to do SOME form of martial arts where there were no other opportunities or options. I was fortunate that I had an old school Korean Vietnam-era instructor, Master Choi, back in the early '80s who became like my second father. I was above average but not great but taught me a lesson in perseverance. He use to beat us with a cane and fail our belt grades if we were not proficient, unlike now where the parents would have him arrested! Helped me become a confident man. Like Joe, I did MMA before MMA was even a term by doing Judo, Muai Thai and started training with diverse practitioners. Those of us who understand the holes find the art, skills and teachers to fill those gaps in our training. It's all about the path and what you get from it.
