  1. Joseph Smith wasn't 14 when he started the religion. He was about 24, and he claimed he had the visitation from the angel Moroni when he was 14 (but he supposedly didn't tell anyone at the time)

  2. A factor in people accepting religions, or cults like Scientology, is the mystique of authority figures, who look the part, look serious, dress for the part, say bold things with apparent extreme confidence, and a lot of people simply take them at face value and fall into line.

There are 2 mentalities: Those who go with authority figures, and those who don't. The latter have a background algorithm running that is continually verifying or spotting anomalies in information coming in. When they find an anomaly, their red lights start flashing, and if they can't find a credible resolution, they will scream FOUL.

Thank God we have such people. They are the ones that move society forward, at least while not being burned at the stake, tortured on the rack, placed in lunatic asylums, or hunted down and eliminated. As an example, the guy who translated the Bible into English was hunted down and killed.

Such a crime, eh? Because authoritarians lose their authority if they allow a challenge to take hold. Truth means nothing to them, so they will go after anyone who spreads inconvenient truths that they so dread.

What drives the persecuted minority to make their stand against all the odds is their inability to accept that which they know to be false. And the associated puzzle is why the majority CAN accept falsehoods.

  3. Calm down, Richard—it's not THAT successful. Atheism is still the most popular "faith" out there. Look at their numbers.

Penn Jillette (a fellow Athiest) called Richard "The Pope of Atheism".

I prefer to think of Richard as more of a "Voice of Atheism".
