You may be right, but a counter example would be Neil Patrick Harris' role as Barney on "How I Met Your Mother". He played the penultimate misogynist all the while NPH while being quite public about his sexuality.
I think what made Neil Patrick Harris work in How I Met Your Mother is the "audience is in on the joke" thing of a gay guy playing an over the top womanizer. I guess that would work for almost any known gay guy playing straight. It's almost like Shakespearean era audiences laughing at a man playing a woman pretending to be a man in As You Like It.
