Read War and Peace. This book gives a lot of the cultural context behind the Napoleon’s invasion of Russia. There’s also some discussion of Freemasonry, including the “illuminated” branch of it. Tolstoy was a fascinating guy. Anyway, I know David and Jon don’t read the comments, but maybe some of you listeners will get some value out of this.
