I think the divide is actually based around authority and how people think it should work. There are two primary camps in this debate, Top-Down Authority vs. Bottom-Up Authority. Fascists and the Alt-Right are almost entirely Top-Down authoritarians, where your job as a citizen is to vote then once the ballot is cast you do what you're told by the person you just put in power. Where as Marxists and the Left tend to be Bottom-Up Authoritarians where your job as a citizen does not end at the polls, we are to keep the politicians honest and they don't get to just do whatever they want once elected. I really think that's the divide that is threatening America the most right now.
