  1. Not to be argumentative, but you don’t get the prestige of a black belt when it’s not earned. These kids are going to go to tournaments has black belts and get smoked by blue belts.

  2. The problem with both is that they are about ego.

    Belt Rank Inflation (Giving someone a higher belt they don't deserve) is bad because it makes other martial artists at the same rank at a much harder dojo look bad, both from public perception, and to potential students. It also necessitates the creation of belts after black like 1st Dan, 2nd Dan, etc. to keep students paying and attending classes.

    Belt Rank Deflation (Giving someone a lower belt they don't deserve) is bad because it can work to demotivate really good students that aren't in the Martial Arts for competition, but are there for structure and exercise. It also makes, competitive Martial Arts harder for the coaches to teach, and harder for the judges to score.
