  1. It’s worth noting, there’s a watered down black belt, then there’s a regular/true black belt, then there’s a firaz black belt… I’ve seen one of his purple belts beat a beast of a black belt from my gym at an ADCC open in a close match… If that guy is only a purple belt in the eyes of coach zahabi… I’ve never met someone who fits the criteria of what he would call a black belt lol

  2. I'm a blue belt at a Gracie school, which I'm pretty sure is what he's talking about. I think it's a great school. It takes 100 lessons (and at least 8 months) to get a stripe. So yes, the stripes are based on how many classes you attend and not on who you can tap. Why is that bad? I'm learning jujitsu. Someone could walk through the door who brand new, but with four years of D1 wrestling and 30 lbs heavier than I am, and he'll destroy me. Does that mean he knows more about bjj? What if I beat a purple belt who is twenty pounds lighter than I am and twenty years older? Do I suddenly know more about bjj than he does? No.

I get it, everyone online, and in gyms, wants to know who the top savage is. Well, it's not the guys at my gym, and we're fine with that. We're all dads, with upper middle class jobs, and between 30-60. I have no interest in some 24 year old spazz rolling as hard as he can against me. I train so I don't ever have to look like a bitch in front of my wife and kids. I do not think that I could go into gyms that are trying to find the next UFC champion and start taping all of their guys out, nor do I care. I know that if I'm ever in a real fight, I'm much better prepared than average.

  3. Fortunately my coach says "there are black belts, and there are black belts. It is better to be a really good white belt, than a bad blue belt." I'm a 4 stripe white belt, been training for 2 years after a 5 year sabbatical (trained 8 months between Brazil & Germany). It is easy to get distracted by belt colour, but he says to the white belts…:"keep turning up it is about discipline, learning and heart. It is a lifestyle for me."
