Shellfish get their vitamin B12 much the same way as other fish. Vitamin B12 is a product of bacterial activity. In the ocean, these bacteria live in the water and in the sediment. They are consumed by smaller marine organisms, which are then eaten by shellfish. As a result, shellfish like clams, oysters, and mussels can contain high levels of B12, as they are filter feeders and eat a lot of these small organisms.
