Great whites generally don't like to eat humans because they don't have enough energy rich blubber like marine mammals. That's why I'm scared to go in the ocean because I do have the right amount of blubber.
I think Jaws literally freaked everyone out tbh. Unlike the film sharks do not deliberately target humans. Most often attacks happen due to mistaken identity. We are too boney for them to digest. They take a bite then once they realise their mistake they bugger off hence why majority of victims live
Sharks are not exactly dumb. Their brains are unlike other animals, almost comparable to an engine.

I went to the ocean for the first time ever last week.
blew my mind just how HUGE the ocean really is.
a map doesn't do it justice.
you have to see it with your own eyes.
and when you start swimming out from the beach, you almost have to push those "what if there's a shark" thoughts out of your head or else you're not gonna enjoy yourself 😂
