Here is the meaning g of this event. Pigs are an obvious enough indication of Gentiles, swine being the most unclean of foods to Jews, and this raises the question of a political meaning. When the language is understood, it is seen by the pesherist that this is a record of a turning point in the gospel period. 'Legion' was Theudas-Barabbas, the Chief Therapeute whose order of Therapeuts who lived in Egypt but whose elders & married members had a center in Rome, so living in both the 'Tombs' (the Egyptian pyramids) & the 'Mountains' (the 7 hills of Rome). Therapeuts held communal meals. These ecstatic communal meals lasting all night are described by Philo and account for the image of frenzy. Even when they lived in Rome, they could be zealot, having 'demons'. But in this year 31AD, that of Agrippa's change of allegiance, Theudas was also changing to Sadducee views, less hostile to Rome, & the spirits of zealotry went into other members of his mission, those led by a man called the 'Two Thousand' a title with similar meaning to the 'Five Thousand'. Now a word about Gerasa. Gerasa, a well-known place whose ruins have been found, was approximately 60 kilometers inland from the shore of Lake Galilee. Because they were Romans and they are something like a pig?
Because pigs are unclean. I believe they suspected Jesus would allow it. They didn't ask to go into a herd of sheep. Jesus would not have allowed that. They requested the pigs because they suspected it would be allowed. Also if the demons wanted to occupy something then why would they cause the pigs to destroy themselves? Likely because they knew it would make Jesus unwelcome in that community. They hoped to cause the people to turn against Jesus and prevent Him from sharing the Gospel and the truth of the Father so that they might come to salvation. But Jesus was already many steps ahead and why He told the healed demoniac to stay and witnesses to the people there. And it worked! Jesus was able to come to them at a later time when the ground had been prepared by the man who was saved.
This is the most accurate interpretation I have seen yet. However, to simplify it of why Jesus sent the demons into the pigs… Jesus mission was not to punish any demons but His mission was to show people how to escape the clutches of evil, by believing in God.
