There was a little bit more involved with the lie that jussie Smollett told. It wasn't a run of the mill lie. If you look up legislation that was offered right around that time you'll see legislation proposed by some Democrat senators and representatives for an anti-lynching law. I think it was a coordinated effort between them and smollette to make a big anti-lynching splash, And then introduce the law right after. Given what happened, I think the law was withdrawn or something like that but it did exist so check it out.
*Update: They pass an Anti lynching law in 2022. Lying pays just like crime pays
