David offered sacrifices, which the Levites were meant to be the ones to do it, It was not condemned, David also did other things which were not in order with the L-RD, but still continued in his stead. I think Saul was too compassionate and quick forgiving, which as of that time, was too early and undermining to the establishment of the State of Israel, while David was a cold blooded genocide killer, which was in line with the L-RD's instructions as of that time. Saul does not have the heart for genocide. He was more of a Yeshua subject.
He was rejected as KING. He decided he would turn against God because he had a hissyfit.
