  1. Does the name Immanuel mean that "God is with us" literally ? Consider what it meant in the 8th century B.C.E., when King Ahaz of Judah (reigned 761-746 B.C.E.) was being threatened by Syrian King Rezin and Pekah of Israel, who were wanting to overthrow Ahaz and put on the throne their own man, "the son of Tabeel", that would have broken the Davidic lineage of kings or "kingdom covenant", which God could NOT allow to happen.(2 Sam 7:13,14,16; Isa 7:1-6)

So, how was this threat to be derailed ? By God, whose name is Jehovah (see Isa 12:2, KJV), sending the Assyrians to take down both kingdoms, for Isaiah 7:7-9 says: "This is what the Sovereign Lord Jehovah says: “It will not succeed, nor will it take place. For the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Reʹzin. Within just 65 years (or in about 694 B.C.E.) Eʹphra·im (or the ten tribe kingdom of Israel, which Ephraim represented) will be completely shattered and cease to be a people. The head of Eʹphra·im is Sa·marʹi·a, and the head of Sa·marʹi·a is the son of Rem·a·liʹah.”

Jehovah now gives a sign of how long it will be before this occurs, saying: "Look ! The young woman (Isaiah's wife) will become pregnant and will give birth to a son (named Maher-shalal-hash-baz, possibly meaning "Hurrying to the spoil, Coming quickly to the plunder"), and she will (symbolically) name him Im·manʹu·el. He will eat butter and honey by the time that he knows how to reject the bad and choose the good. For before the boy knows how to reject the bad and choose the good, the land of the two kings (Rezin and Pekah) whom you dread will be completely abandoned (with Rezin being put to death by Assyrian king Tiglath-pileser, 2 Kings 16:7-9). Jehovah will bring against you and against your people and against the house of your father a time such as has not come since the day Eʹphra·im broke away from Judah, for He will bring the king of As·syrʹi·a."(Isa 7:14-17)

After telling about the birth of Isaiah’s second son, Maher-shalal-hash-baz, the prophecy next describes how the threat to Judah would be removed. As an irresistible flood, the Assyrians would completely inundate Syria and the northern kingdom of Israel, not stopping until they had dangerously spread over the land of Judah, even to "fill the breadth of your land, O Immanuel !” apparently within some three years after this declaration by Jehovah.(Isa 8:8)

Then, in poetic grandeur, the prophet Isaiah warns all those in opposition to Jehovah: If you prepare yourselves for war, if you plan out a scheme, if you speak a word against Jehovah that would alter the Davidic lineage—“say what you like, but it will not succeed, for God is with us [Immanuel]!”(Isa 8:5-10)

So, this only shows that Jehovah God does NOT need to be literally with anyone (nor has he ever been, for John 1:18 says that "no man has seen God at any time"), but sends whom he chooses to REPRESENT him, such as Jesus Christ who arrived as the Messiah in 29 C.E.(Dan 9:25) so that the Davidic line remained unbroken and the "kingdom covenant" could be fulfilled, he being the one that is designated at this time as the symbolic Immanuel, for Jehovah was with the nation of Israel through his "only-begotten Son", Jesus Christ.(Matt 1:23; John 3:16)
