You're using that digit more than you think. It isn't strong, but it senses movement when the other digits can not under load.
It keeps you from twisting or yawing your wrest and gives a wider base/ foundation to work off of.
I we developed without it, our hands would be a lot more narrow, less mass per square inch and weaker!
