Callen gives the most half truth versions of history ever. The opium trade started as a way to counter balance the incredibly strict trade laws of the Chinese empire. The British wanted to buy tea and sell goods to open a legitimate co trade route, and China would sell tea but not allow any goods except silver back into China. So as a way to not go bankrupt and to circumvent the laws the British EITC went black market and started bringing in opium to China. Then China tried to attack the British trading posts and the opium wars started. Just in case people heard callen and thought what he said was what happened.
